There are numerous tales about where and how Jeffrey’s bay got its name. Some say that the name derived from Captain Jeffrey when his ship was ship wrecked here, he fell in love with this area and so it became Jeffrey’s bay. My aunt Jeffreyna and her entire book club swear that the name comes from a trader/ whale hunter circa 1850 J.A Jeffrey, originally from St. Helena, who used this town as a harbour and trading post. So this town’s history is a little bit moggy, it’s still one of the best coastal towns to visit when in south Africa. Nothing moggy about that fact. Come see for yourself.
Jbay surfing and its history
This is a legendary tale which starts with the father of surfing South Africa: John Whitmore. During the late 1950`s Whitmore was on a business trip. A spray of sea foam caught his eye and so he got out of his car to have a closer inspection. The sight that met his eyes amazed him- what he was looking at was an unmapped break with the most perfect right hand, crisp lines wrapping around the point of what could have been a 1.2km ride.
Then, in 1961 Bruce Brown came to our shores to film a part of the cult classic “The Endless Summer” this surf-documentary captured the magic of firing waves and sparked the imaginations of a million surfers.
The rest is all free love and hippy vibes. Cristal Cove invites you to experience surfing as you’ve never experienced it before. Go on; see what all the hype is about.
